Home Technology
Just about everyone has a home network and more recently now need a home office so that they can work comfortably (see below). Usually the network is taken for granted, installed by your provider and you just use it. Most people forget about it until it goes wrong. Well now is the time to make more of it, ensuring its secure, external access is restricted and your guest and home WiFi networks are separated. Once its secured then its time to make it work for you, read on below
Setting up your home office
If you have got the space, anything from a spot under the stairs to a spare bedroom or junk room we can help to transform it into a comfortable and organised working space with the best connectivity available to you. We can source desks and furniture to suit your needs and budget.
Secure your router
All broadband routers come with a default password, usually its printed on the router – CHANGE THIS PASSWORD!!
You should never leave the router set to the default password.
Also, disable external access to the router admin pages.
Does your provider offer “hot spots” whilst your out and about? If so, there is a good chance that you are also providing the same service to other users. You can usually opt out of this feature.
Free voice calls with Alexa
Free Voice calls – yes that’s right FREE voice calls.
If you have an Amazon Alexa device you can quickly set up to allow hands-free voice calls to all UK landline and mobile phones. Note that 3 digit (eg 111) , non-geographic (eg 08xx) and premium numbers are excluded.
With household profiles you can easily separate your details so that Alexa will restrict access to your own contacts – nice.
Add Guest Access to your WiFi
Just like the admin password for your router, the WiFi Name (technically known as the SSID) has a default for both the name and password. Again these will be printed on the router label.
CHANGE these as soon as possible!!
Also, you should create a guest WiFi network so that you can give out the details to your visitors without revealing your main network password.
This allows you to provide internet access to guests without allowing access to any of your own services.
Home Network Storage Solution
Create your own centralised network storage solution for use by all your family. Secured against unauthorised external access, it will be a central repository for all your important files, photos and videos.
Reduce risk of hardware failure using built in resilience starting from around £160 and increasing depending on your capacity and resilience needs.
Add a network printer to your home network so anyone can print from your home network.
